Common имеет значение "принадлежащий или относящийся к нескольким, по крайней мере к двум, объектам"; common обозначает общность двух или нескольких объектов, противоположность какому-то третьему объекту, ситуации или предмету: common purpose общая цель (для группы людей); common cause общее дело (для определенного слоя общества); common property общее/совместное достояние; common knowledge нечто общеизвестное (среди определенного круга). Этот оттенок чужд прилагательному general, в котором нет идеи противопоставления третьей стороне, как правило, general всеобщее, без ограничений, действие: general elections всеобщие выборы; general strike всеобщая забастовка. (2.) Оба прилагательных могут сочетаться с существительным knowledge, но не являются в этих сочетаниях взаимозаменяемыми: common knowledge общеизвестные факты/факты, известные многим (но не всем); general knowledge знания/сведения общего характера (известные всем). В этом последнем значении general образует такие словосочетания, как: a general impression общее впечатление; a general idea общее представление; a general outline общий обзор; in general terms в общих чертах/терминах (без деталей); a general hospital неспециализированная больница/больница общего типа -
